AMANDA’S STORY

My story is rooted in faith, family and community. Raised alongside the Columbia River in The Dalles, OR, my father worked for the Oregon State Police and my mom worked for Oregon DHS Children & Youth. I was active in church youth group, played soccer, swam on the summer swim team and played on a softball team coached by my dad. My father was also a federally licensed firearm dealer for 42 years. Our family fished, hunted and camped along the rivers and lakes across Oregon.

My family stressed the importance of service to the community and country. My father served in the U.S. Coast Guard and both my grandfathers served in WWII. I learned what a Purple Heart was after my grandfather passed and it was brought out of a trunk. He never spoke of heroics. His legacy was his gentle demeanor and endearing commitment to his country and comrades.

It has been an honor to serve you as your Yakima County Commissioner representing District 1. I am excited and eager to continue a proactive approach to working and problem-solving with the full Commissioners Board and team at Yakima County on behalf of everyone in Yakima County.

My business background and community involvement provided incredible preparation and skillsets needed to deal with the important issues facing the County. I have lived in Yakima for over 19 years. A career of 21 years in mortgage banking has allowed me to see hundreds of families live out their dream of home ownership while deepening my knowledge of finance, real estate, property rights, land use and how to achieve success through bureaucratic processes.

My father is a retired state police officer. He inspired me to achieve degrees in pre-law with focus on in criminal justice, and in political science with emphasis in constitutional law. I am proud of my strong ties to our great law enforcement community. I grew up in a farming community and worked seasonally during cherry harvest. My husband’s family has farmed in the Yakima Valley for over 100 years. We are proud of our deep roots and connection to the incredible agricultural industry and its people in Yakima County.

I believe a strong commissioner can help make Yakima County a better place for all of us to live. Every day I work with intense focus to blend the values of conservative, small-town America with fiscal responsibility and a vision for a more prosperous future. I want a safe Yakima Valley, job opportunities for our children and grandchildren, and a strong sense of community.

This is OUR county and my job is to help make county government work better for YOU! I would love to hear from you. You can reach me directly at my campaign email: amanda@amandamckinney.us.
